SUMMARY:
Perform plant operation, testing, maintenance and administrative functions for a combined cycle power plant.
Position is based at Southwest Generation’s Arapahoe facility in Denver, Colorado. The Arapahoe facility is
a 122 MW (nominal) 2 x 1 configuration, utilizing two (2) LM 6000 PC gas turbines.
The combined cycle
plant achieved commercial operation in October 2002. Additionally, this position will
support Operation
and Maintenance of a simple cycle power plant located in Boulder Colorado.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Communicate with supervisor and other operators on plant equipment operating condition and other
pertinent information.
- Comprehensive understanding of combined cycle power plant operations to include start-up, shutdown
and emergency operational actions.
- Perform start-up, operation, monitoring, shutdown and tag-out of plant auxiliary equipment at the
equipment location.
- Knowledge of equipment operating limits, parameters, operating procedures/ systems and performs
corrective actions if limits are exceeded.
- Provide lubrication, preventive, overhaul and emergency maintenance on assigned equipment.
- Report all abnormal plant conditions and required maintenance.
- Operate all plant mobile equipment, forklift, man lift, etc.
- Assist other plant personnel as needed.
- Work safely, following company policies, procedures and work practices in a positive, cooperative,
and productive manner.
- Directs and performs work safely and in accordance with policies/procedures established by the
company and regulating agencies.
- Prepares and maintains documents/reports such as environmental, work requests, material requests,
accident reports, attendance reports, preventive maintenance, overhaul work reports and other logs.
- Monitor and control plant performance to obtain optimum safe and efficient operation including
performance testing.
- Perform both routine and non-routine preventative and corrective maintenance on plant equipment.
- Use installed and portable test equipment and technical manuals to troubleshoot equipment and systems.
- Perform chemical analysis on plant water systems which include boiler water demineralized water,
condensate water, feedwater, cooling water, and raw water.
- Operate and perform routine maintenance on a reverse osmosis system and mixed bed type demineralizing.
- Maintenance and upkeep of site buildings and grounds.
- Maintain trend reports on equipment operation for assigned system.
- Ensure adequate supplies of oil and chemicals are available to support plant operation.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to operate gas turbines, aerodervative technology, LM6000, LM5000, and/or LM2500.
- Ability to operate computer control systems.
- Working knowledge of combined cycle power plant system, power plant operations, and maintenance,
electrical principles, work practices, procedures and materials.
- Understand the principles of chemistry and their relationship to power plant operations.
- Ability to provide work direction and training to small groups of employees in a professional and
accurate manner.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to make decisions, monitor and evaluate plant systems and status of plant operations.
- Ability to understand, review and revise schematics, drawings and equipment manuals.
- Ability to operate computers and various computer programs.
- Able to perform arithmetic functions including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and
some basic algebra.
- Able to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Able to analyze causes and effect situations with plant systems.
- Able to read, understand, apply and revise operating procedures.
- Able to handle emergencies including fire, tornado, medical emergency, etc.
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma.
- Successful completion of power plant training program is preferred, but not required.
- Electrical and Instrument experience is preferred, but not required.
- Position will require a qualification process to demonstrate ability to properly and safely
operate the power plant.
- Four years power plant experience. OR a combination of power plant training and
experience. OR ten years Electrical, Instrumentation or Mechanical Trade experience.
Material and Equipment Directly Used:
- Laboratory and testing equipment.
- Various hand tools, power tools, and lubrication equipment.
- All power plant equipment.
- Chemicals
Working Environment:
- Work is generally performed inside the power plant but may require significant periods
of work outside in inclement weather.
Physical Demands:
- Work is generally not physically demanding but requires the ability to climb stairs, lift
50 pounds and carry a few feet.
- Work is sometimes performed at high levels of exertion, especially during times of plant upset.
- Able to hear (at some dB limit of loss) in order to hear plant alarms, equipment condition,
and to receive oral instructions.
- Able to wear a respirator.
